What the Bible Says About Marriage: Importance, Love, Fidelity, and Support

Marriage is one of the most common themes raised in sacred scriptures, and many biblical books discuss marital unions.

Likewise, the union is also represented in the Bible as an analogy between God and his people.

Marriage describes the relationship that Christ has with the church, even Christ performed his first miracle when they were celebrating a wedding (John 2:1-11) and (Ephesians 5:25).

Husbands, love your wives as the Messiah loved the church and gave himself for it

Ephesians 5:25

The marriage union is presented in the Bible as a holy relationship, special, and blessed by God (Genesis 1:27).

What the Bible Says About Marriage

A marriage is a union in which two people unite their lives forever; it is a very important step in people’s lives.

It is a very important step in the life of a person, since at the moment of contracting a marriage, it is necessary to live with the customs and differences of each person.

Therefore, before making a decision to unite life with someone, there must be love.

God put in the Bible some advice that people who will marry should follow, so that everything goes well in this union.

The treatment of spouses

Love in marriage should be similar to that which Christ felt for the church, a great feeling, so much so that each one is even willing to give his or her life for the other.

Honor the partner in every possible way, respect, and value the person throughout the union that has been blessed by God.

Support within marriage is also a necessary quality; it should be reciprocal, and neither partner should feel superior to the other.

The conjugal union

A husband should fulfill his obligation to his wife, and a wife should do the same for her husband.

Corinthians 7:3

Regarding the carnal union, Corinthians 7:3 says that within marriage, the husband and wife should please each other.

A husband should fulfill his obligation to his wife, and a wife should do the same for her husband.

Corinthians 7:3

The Bible even states that one’s body belongs to the other, making each union mutually consensual with love and respect.

Each partner in the marriage union complements the other; God expressed in the Bible that the husband should love his wife as himself.

 Fidelity within marriage

To honor marriage is not only to complement each other but also to be faithful in the face of carnal temptations, as Hebrews 13:4 says.

God will judge adulterers; the Lord does not justify unfaithfulness, since not honoring marriage is like betraying God’s relationship with his people.

Each partner must communicate within the marriage and honor the relationship, as God commands in his scriptures.

Marriage is a supportive union

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.

Ecclesiastes 4:9

Ecclesiastes 4:9 states that the marriage union is intended to support both parties in the relationship to accompany each other for life.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.

Ecclesiastes 4:9

It is physical and emotional support made up of two people with good principles, so that if one goes through a bad time, the other can help make it better.

Two people are better than one, complement each other, support each other, stand up in adversity, warm each other in the cold, and be each other’s canes.

Love is the foundation of marriage

A marriage without love will not prosper; love is what lays the foundation for a successful marriage, as 1 Corinthians 13:7 says.

She bears up under everything;
believes the best in all;
there is no limit to her hope,
and never will she fall.

1 Corinthians 13:7

A person who loves another is able to strive, hope, believe, and endure his or her partner, even though there may be difficult times.

When love is true, problems can be faced, and two people who love each other show their unconditional support, even if they have to make sacrifices for their partner.

Love forgives in spite of differences

Knowing how to forgive is a necessary quality in any family or marriage; in any relationship, there will be problems, and that is why it is important to know how to ask for forgiveness when it is required.

As a Christian marriage expert, Aaron Smith put it in an interview with BibleGateway:

“We can look back at those early years and see clearly the mistakes we made and what we could have done better, and how we could’ve been unified doing it. Those challenges we encountered gave us the opportunity to learn more about each other and about how God desires us to engage and interact with each other.” Said Aaron Smith.

Many marriages have failed because they do not forgive mistakes, so it is important to understand the differences and forgive from the heart.

God is able to restore a marriage, the Lord created marriage as a lifelong union, and only he could transform, forgive, and give a new beginning.
