The Importance of Faith: Understanding Its Role and How to Increase It

Explore the benefits and the importance of faith, learn how to overcome doubts and obstacles, and discover the power of spiritual practices to strengthen your connection with your beliefs.

Faith is one of the most important characteristics of a Christian, since it is part of the assurance that God will be there at all times; it is believing in God and in his miracles.

In the Bible, faith is described as a complete assurance in obtaining something that cannot even be seen, and faith trust in God increases.

As Hebrews 11:1 says, faith is the certainty that God will do in his own way and in his own time, what is expected of the requests made to Him.

Now faith is the assurance that what we hope for will come about[a] and the certainty that what we cannot see exists.

Hebrews 11:1

Faith in the Bible

In the Bible, there are many examples of how faith has helped God’s children in difficult times or in times of need, and Jesus is a good example of the integrity of faith.

After Jesus’s baptism, he went to the desert to fast for forty days and nights, and when his body became weak, he was tempted by Satan to corrupt his faith.

Jesus, who was God, but fully human was also tempted to sin, yet his integrity remained above temptation (Heb 4:15).

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. Instead, we have one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet he never sinned.

Hebrews 4:15

In turn, Christians were called to follow the example of Jesus, being a new creation thanks to the sacrifice of the Son of God, Christians are considered sinless before God (2 Corinthians 5:17); Likewise, Christians receive the Holy Spirit, who dwells in each one and works to sanctify.

Therefore, if anyone is in the Messiah, he is a new creation. Old things have disappeared, and—look!—all things have become new!

2 Corinthians 5:17

Faith in following God has the power to make people more upright; it is the call to obey God and his commandments.

The importance of faith

The Bible is clear about the importance of faith in God; faith accepts that God is real in the life of each one and that he is the one who can make the desires of the heart come true.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God; every person who comes to Christ must trust that God exists and has the power to give eternal life (Hebr. 11:6).

Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him.

Hebrews 11:6

God also points out in the bible that there is no God like him; therefore, he has shown his mercy and love for mankind.

However, faith also requires humility of the heart, to see that as human beings, we live by grace, thanks to the fact that God has transformed each one of us. Romans 12:3.

For by the grace given to me I ask every one of you not to think of yourself more highly than you should think, rather to think of yourself with sober judgment on the measure of faith that God has assigned each of you.

Romans 12:3

God also promised the world eternal life for everyone who believes (John 3:16), and thus sent his only son to sacrifice himself to cleanse the sins of the world.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his uniquely existing Son so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life.

John 3:16

How can faith be increased according to the Bible?

Faith is the confidence born at the depths of the heart; it is a feeling that grows as one gets to know God and his love.

Jesus works through the hearts of all who believe in Him, and through His word the faith of the heart grows little by little.

Likewise, faith manifests itself in actions, words, and decisions, trusting that God will go ahead in every action.

Faith is also part of the belief in God’s promises; one must trust from the heart that God is fulfilling these promises.

For faith to grow, it is also necessary to pray, talk, and communicate all concerns to God, open the heart to the needs, and trust the promises that he has fulfilled.

God also does not leave his children to face battles alone, but he provides armor to overcome spiritual battles. Ephesians 6:16.

In addition to having clothed yourselves with these things, having taken up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one

Ephesians 6:16

When walking with Jesus, it is common for doubts or uneasy thoughts to arise; however, by using the shield of faith, all such attacks will pass.

Christian writer Mel Lawrenz says in an interview for BibleGateway, where he expressed that the objective of Christians should be to know and be like God.

“Knowing the Bible is not the ultimate objective. Knowing God is. Really knowing God. And knowing God via the revelation God has given of himself, not our imaginary constructs. Studying Scripture in this way is about both facts and faith.” said Mel Lawrenz.

Faith is able to transform

God says in the Bible that everything he believes in is a new creature, the old things have passed away and everything has been created anew.

Faith transforms and turns a hard and worried heart into a humble and peaceful one, because faith is trusting that God will be there in difficult moments.

Always keep the faith

Keeping faith in God is one of the most important qualities; keeping faith is doing good, even despite the consequences.

On many occasions, the integrity of faith is put to the test, to review one’s behavior, and to grow trust in God.

Through faith in God, one can become like Him, who is the perfect model of each and the foundation of life.

In addition to having clothed yourselves with these things, having taken up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one
